It began as a dream and a leap of faith. In 2020, Ethiopia’s first Cup of Excellence competition revealed that exceptional coffee could be celebrated. Inspired, Tamiru and his wife, Messi, launched Alo Coffee to showcase Sidama’s finest. Before then, Tamiru, a former university teacher and engineer, having witnessed the struggles of undervalued farmers and the frustrations of unfair pricing was hesitant to start his own venture. In 2021, their first lot from Bensa’s Alo village won the national Cup Of Excellence. Today, Alo Coffee champions quality, uplifts farmers, and shares Ethiopia’s rich coffee heritage with the world.
