February 2023. Wilson and I touch down in Ethiopia with one mission: secure five tonnes of micro lots.

Four days of heat and dust. Jungle huts. Fourteen-hour drives. Then Alo Coffee’s drying station. Quality you can feel: perfectly picked cherries; honeys and naturals drying on raised African beds with views for days. Check our Insta highlights, you’ll see it. No wonder Tamiru and his wife, Messi, won the 2021 Ethiopia Cup of Excellence. Back in Addis, the cupping gauntlet: hundreds of samples, mostly misses - until Tamiru’s HQ. We roast. We cup. Fireworks. This is the one… and it’s already sold out.

Two years later, we finally secured a lot from Tamiru. You’re tasting it now - roasted by us, on bar and in bags. Enjoy.

Origin Story

It began as a dream and a leap of faith. In 2020, Ethiopia’s first Cup of Excellence competition revealed that exceptional coffee could be celebrated. Inspired, Tamiru and his wife, Messi, launched Alo Coffee to showcase Sidama’s finest. Before then, Tamiru, a former university teacher and engineer, having witnessed the struggles of undervalued farmers and the frustrations of unfair pricing was hesitant to start his
own venture. In 2021, their first lot from Bensa’s Alo village won the national Cup Of Excellence. Today, Alo Coffee champions quality, uplifts farmers, and shares Ethiopia’s rich coffee heritage with the world.

Process & care

Our sourcing philosophy

Every coffee has a story. Every cup connects people. Sourcing coffee is not just about logistics and contracts. It’s about people, patience, and purpose. Every bag of green coffee represents someone’s work, someone’s story, and a shared pursuit of excellence.

Our relationships are built at Origin. We create partnerships built on respect, shared goals, and good coffee. We believe the best coffees come from long-term partnerships. Many of our producers have worked with us for years, refining the characteristics of the coffee we seek. These relationships are built on mutual respect and open communication. Travelling to visit our producing partners is key to nurturing relationships that matter.

Consistency and quality

From origin to roastery, every step is about consistency. Every shipment we receive is cupped and compared against its pre-ship sample to confirm that the coffee matches the quality and profile we expect. It’s a process that demands time and focus, but it’s what ensures every batch of Deluca coffee delivers on flavour and reliability.
